Are there any medium ot large sized dogs that are acceptable for people who are allergic to dogs?

By

I’m allergic to dogs and though it will probably be sevearal years before I move out and get my own dog I was wondering if there are any medium to large sized dogs that are ok for people who are allergic to dogs.

Terriers are cute but seem desctructive and too hyper and yappy for my taste. I’d prefer a less hyper dog.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Generally speaking, shorter haired dogs produce less dander and fur. From my experience, I’d recommend an American Bulldog. Short haired with very low maintenance (regarding fur or nail care), smart, watchful but not overly protective…great dogs!

My allergies are TERRIBLE, but Gypsie has NEVER given me any issues with allergies. While American Bulldogs CAN be hyper, they generally respond well to a good owner who understands that they need exercise.

Poodles they come in three sizes small, med and large ok Toy less than 10 inches, Miniature 10-15 and Standard over 15 with the top size being around 27 inches. I have a Std and a Mini just remember they need training and jobs.

For your information, people are allergic to the dog’s dandruff, not the fur, so I would recommend:

1. Poodle
2. Yorkshire terrier
3. Miniature Schnauzer

My nana has an allergy to animal hair but hates small dogs so she got a labradoodle. Which is a cross between a labrador and poodle. They don’t malt as other breeds. Also the standard poodle itself is meant to be the best breed for those with allergies

There are no truly hypoallergenic dogs. All dogs have dander to some degree, though there are some dogs who are more friendly to those with allergies.

Poodles are often recommended for people with allergies. A Standard Poodle would fall into the category of a large-breed dog. They require rather extensive grooming, but allergy sufferers find that they are much easier to live with than other breeds that shed more/produce more dander. They are very smart and are highly trainable. The AKC event of Rally Obedience was created to showcase the Standard Poodle’s intelligence and trainability.

I found the following website which lists some breeds of dogs that are more friendly to those with allergies.

how about a portugeuse water dog … they are considered “hypoallergenic” (no dog is truly hypoallergenic as people can be allergic to the fur/hair, dander or saliva) … here are some others you could consider …

“Potentially Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

* Basenji
* Bedlington Terrier
* Bichon Frise
* Border Terrier
* Chinese Crested
* Coton de Tulear
* Havanese
* Irish Water Spaniel
* Kerry Blue Terrier
* Maltese
* Poodle
* Portuguese Water Dog
* Puli
* Schnauzer
* Shih Tzu
* Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
* Xoloitzcuintli
* Yorkshire Terrier ”

and terriers if trained correctly are not destructive nor hyper nor yappy :O) but i may be bias :O) the portugeuse water dog i am dog-sitting now is a yapper, and not my little terrier …
