Best way to treat a dogs ear infection?

By

So my dog has an fairly severe ear infection. He’s had it for almost a year now, and weve spent about $3000 (AUD) on treatment mainly with antibiotics, but nothing has worked. During the colder months, he’s been in even more distress than usual. We’ve called the main veterinary hospital in my city, but they wont touch him until the antibiotics have stopped the infection. All up, starting treatment again will cost another $6000 or so.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Has any vet suggested a TECA – total ear canal ablation – with an LBO – lateral bulla osteotomy? Yahoo search these procedures and discuss with your vet. I believe these options suit your situation.

Add: Might want to see a new vet if your current one has allowed this to continue for a year without making these suggestions.

It’s hard for me to imagine, MY dog having an ear infection FOR A YEAR! What’s going on?? If he were my dog, I would be researching on the Net, and seeking out a vet who specializes in this field. (been there, done that). Your dog, is no doubt, suffering from this, and is not getting to enjoy his life, normally. Don’t be afraid to ask your vet for a referral. Are you sure, you haven’t been getting “milked” from this vet?? I hope you can resolve your pooches discomfort, soon. Good luck.

I think you need to find a new vet.

True, some dogs are prone to persistent or recurrent ear infections (I have one), but I think your vet should have, long before now, suggested an alternative to endless courses of antibiotics that CLEARLY aren’t working.
