Now is the right time.
Make sure that the veterinarian is experienced cropping dogs of your breed; ear cropping is an art, and you don’t want a beginner hacking at your pup, because he could ruin the dog’s looks forever.

Ears cropped properly under general anesthetic in the care of a licensed and practiced veterinarian is not cruelty.

What type of dog is it?

I don’t know. Cropping your dogs ears…they go through a lot of pain going through that! They have to get them stitches and everything. The surgery is normally performed at 12 weeks, and sometimes the surgery can be done later on. It could cause numerous infections to your dog as well.

Why do you want to do that to you dog? What breed is the dog?

i am about to graduate as a CVT (certified veterinary technician), do NOT crop your dogs ears now! for certain breeds in AKC standards is one thing, but that should be done within days after birth not months, just like docking tails. it CAN be done now, but is more humane earlier on. it will be more painful at this age.

No, it’s too late. Ear cropping must be done when the pup is between 8 to 12 weeks old. Your pup is too old, the cartilage in his ears has started forming and taking shape the way they are, and if you cropped them now they would probably never stand correctly.

You will have a really hard time finding a vet that will do it. The ears should be cropped by now. Not many vets do crops anymore & only few are real pros at doing great crop jobs & require pups have crop before 16wk. You will have to find a vet that specializes in crops & expect to pay a pretty penny & lots of aftercare on your part. Contact breed club closest to you for vet referrals.

“Humans can opt out of cosmetic surgery, but dogs aren’t so lucky. We choose for them—and we often choose painful, unnecessary procedures such as ear-cropping and tail-docking. To give certain breeds so-called “desirable” traits, unscrupulous veterinarians perform cruel, disfiguring surgeries that cause dogs great suffering.

Dogs usually have their ears cropped when they are just 8 to 12 weeks old. At this stage in their development, the trauma of the procedure can have a strong psychological impact on the maturing pup. The process of taping and retaping a pup’s ears to force them to stand erect after they have been cropped can be agonizing for the dog.

Performing medically unnecessary procedures that simply perpetuate the image of dogs as fashion accessories is outrageous. This image is promoted by the American Kennel Club at its canine beauty pageants and by breeders who believe that “their” breed will be “ruined” if it does not maintain the image handed down by parent breed clubs decades ago.

hese procedures are so cruel that they are banned in many European countries. For example, British kennel clubs outlawed ear-cropping a century ago, and cosmetic tail-docking was stopped the U.K. in 1993.

Sadly, some veterinarians still see nothing wrong with mutilating a dog whose guardian is willing to pay for it. The American Veterinary Medical Association states that “ear-cropping and tail-docking are not medically indicated nor of benefit to the patient. These procedures cause pain and distress and, as with all surgical procedures, are accompanied by inherent risks of anesthesia, blood loss, and infection. Therefore, veterinarians should counsel dog owners about these matters before agreeing to perform these surgeries.”

YES.

& spewing peta-nutz ranting propaganda-LIES- is a violation.

The chance of a proper crop significantly decreases if the pup is more than 16 weeks old.You are at the limit for most breeds/crop styles at this point. If the cartilage is already set,it is too late.

The surgery really needs to be done at around 12 weeks of age, 16 weeks at the latest. After that time, it is highly unlikely the ears will stand. Any later then that, and the cartilage has already finished forming.

I would not recommend it for your dog. It is too old, and all you will get is a bad crop job. The vet can cut the ear, but there is nothing anyone can do to make it stand if the cartilage is already formed.

He needs to be cropped now if you are going to do it, and that is assuming he is a breed with a very short crop. 6 months is too late an in all likelihood the ears will not stand at that point if you crop them. 16 weeks is the limit for breeds with a very short crop 12 weeks is the limit for breeds with a medium to long crop.

Have to love the person claiming the be a vet tech then claiming cropping is done at days old. Home none of the vet techs at my vets office went to school where she did. Cropping is not and has never been done at days old. 7 weeks is typically the minimum age for cropping.
