Yes, heartworm preventative must be given monthly in most locations (in some locations where winters are very very cold, your vet may recommend it only in summer months, visit them for recommendation). Whatever shot was given was not for heartworm prevention.
I live in hawaii and it is manditory that you give them the heart worm pill every month, Cats don’t need it but its good to give them flee medicine once a month.

Shots are for certain diseases – rabies etc. – NOT heartworm.
Heartworm pills are for heartworms, which strangle the heart and often kill a dog.
