Good quality dog food with good calcium for rottweiler puppy?

By

The vet told me that Rottweilers need good calcium because they have issues with bones.
She recommended Hill’s Science diet, but I researched it and it’s really LOW quality food, containing mainly corn. Which is bad for dogs.
What is a good food that contains good source of calcium and other good ingredients? Thank you.

Yes science diet is one of the worst foods
if you read the label before you by it it shows the levels of vitamins and nutrients
Innova or Evo are good foods but they are a bit pricey

I ditched the commercial dog food months ago, and I’m so happy I did. I now feed my dogs a prey-model raw diet, which means they eat all raw food; roughly 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% organs (half of which is liver). Adult dogs eat 2-3% of their ideal body weight daily, and growing puppies can eat 5-10% of their current body weight daily.

Feeding raw has so many benefits. Some of the most common things are a healthy, shiny coat; little to no gas; small, firm, and mostly odorless stools; clean, sweet-smelling breath; no “doggy” odor; and brilliantly white teeth free from plaque. While it may sound expensive or complicated to prepare, it really isn’t. I buy in bulk, and spend about 15-30 minutes every two weeks preparing food, which I bag into daily servings and store in the freezer until ready for consumption.

Whole chicken leg quarters are a good starter food. Then after a couple weeks you can slowly add in organs and other protein sources. I feed mostly chicken because it’s easy to digest and economical (I can get a 10 lb. bag of leg quarters at a local grocery store for $4.90), and I try to mix in other protein sources such as pork, beef, or fish a couple times a week. I usually wait to buy these when they’re on sale, and then stock up. I also give an egg once or twice a week, as well as fish oil a few times a week to give an extra boost of Omega 3 and DHA (eggs and fish oil are good for dogs whether they’re on kibble or raw). And then you can also try and find cheap and/or free meats like scraps from butchers, taxidermists, hunters, or friends with large freezers (freezerburnt meat tastes fine to dogs!).

In case you’re interested in learning more about raw feeding, here’s some very informative links to get you started:

Anyway, hope that gives you some “food for though”, ha ha… But yeah, good luck!

Since your puppy is going to mature at over 50lbs., he should be eating a large breed puppy formula food. Nutro makes several varieties of large breed puppy food. The large breed puppy formulas have lower fat and higher protein to support proper development while attempting to prevent rapid, excessive weight gain; also levels of calcium and phosphorus are maintained at lower levels than a regular puppy food to support proper bone development of large breed puppies. Nutro doesn’t use any fillers, artificial colorings, artificial preservatives, or animal by-products. Also, Nutro makes all their own foods in their own production facilities. They do not outsource the production of any of their foods to outside companies.

I also feed raw diet for all my rotties and the breed does very well on it.

However, if you want to go dry food just get the best quality large breed puppy. If you are US then I think you have better quality foods than we can get in UK. Try for a grain free food.

I have answered mostly to do with this calcium business, as too much calcium is just as bad for a rottie as too little. It is the calcium / phosphorus balance that has to be right. The body is not able to rid excess calcium and if there is too much then it lays it down in extra bone which can cause OCD. So please do not give calcium supplements or anything like that.
