Has anyone ever owned (or have) a dog with a heart murmur??
ByWhat can one expect down the road. Thank you.
Hottbabe…good answer, might be hot but not real smart, well what ever works. Why answer something just for the sake of typing somethng?

It a lot of time depends on the grade of heart murmur. Talk to your vet they can give you a better idea. Though I have seen some dogs that have really bad heart murmurs have great lives and others with not so bad murmurs have bad lives. So it really depends on the dog. Ask your vet what to do to help your dog.

i have had 2 die with a heart murmur
one was 10 yrs one 20 they will start to have rapid
breathing
that means the heart is no longer working well
i wood take it to the vet when you see this ok
i no it hurts

My roommate’s current dog has a heart murmur.
The vet says she doesn’t need anything for it and the only thing necessary is to keep it checked regularly and to take her in if she starts to have any swelling or trouble breathing.
Heart murmurs run the gamut. Only a vet can tell you how bad one is and if it needs to be treated or just watched. In my roommate’s dog’s case she’s having no troubles and pretty near to the end of the natural life expectancy of her breed. It’s unlikely that this will be what kills her, more likely the cancer that took out both of her parents will–she’s already had a couple of small tumors removed.

You need to have your vet refer you to a vet cardiologist specialist. They will do a EKG and determine the correct dosage of heart medicine for the dog. If the murmur isn’t that bad they may not even have to put the dog on medication as of yet. If the murmur is bad, the out come will be devastating, Sorry.

My mother-in-law has a beagle with not only a heart nurmur but also epilepsy. The vet has the dog on medication to control the epilepsy but nothing for the heart murmur.
They dog is now 11 years old and is doing just fine. One of the concerns with the heart murmer is if the dog needs surgery, it may have troublew with the anaesthesia.
“Jackson” has had a very happy and healthy life. Sometimes he tires out and won’t get off the couch for hours. If you make allowances for the dog, it has the potential to turn out fine. Don’e over excercise it.
