How can I keep my dog from barking at strangers?

By

I live pretty much out in the country and our nearest neighbor is a quarter-mile away. So there’s not a lot of people to let the dog adjust to new people. So anytime we get a visitor our dog will just constantly bark at them as soon as they start coming down the driveway, but she never bites them. It has actually driven the mail man away. Is there any way I can stop her from doing this?

Collar and leash. Be out (or inside) next to your dog – praise the first bark, stop the second and rest with an ‘all right, I know they’re there’. Make the dog sit next to you as you both watch them, and correct any repeating barks. A sit is a subservient position, you can alter dog behavior easier that way.
