How do I stop my dog from barking out the window?!?

By

She is a little over a year and we live right in front of a dog park. Whenever she sees any other dog, she goes crazy and starts barking like crazy. It’s really loud and annoying the neighbors and us. She is not alerting us of danger, but rather wants to go outside and play with the other dogs. It’s louder when it’s a dog she is friends with. We are now forced to keep our blinds shut during the day and that sucks! She is a shiba-inu, spayed and really cute, but loud for a shiba-inu. It’s driving me and my wife crazy, please help!

Unfortunately some breeds of dogs are more inclined to bark than others.

But you may be able to stop this behaviour in any dog, although it would have been easier if you started earlier when the annoying habit first began.

First of all, never shout at the dog when it is doing it. This just sounds like you are barking too and joining in and encourages the dog to continue barking.

Get used to using a low growly voice for telling your dog you are displeased with him. Imagine a pack of dogs. What voice does the alpha dogs use to curtail bad behaviour in the youngsters?

I would say “That’ll do.” in a low growly voice, once. If he doesn’t stop immediately go to him and stand over him and repeat it in a threatening stance. If he still doesn’t respect you, pick him up and put him in time out at the back of the house where he can’t see the other dog. Leave him on his own for a few minutes and when he has quietened down let him out without making a fuss of him.

Repeat until he lets dogs pass with only one bark or none.

This is the technique I use with my boxer and it seems to work. I got the trick from watching Casesar Milan.

If you stand if front of the dog, blocking his view out the window and make the dog sit, it gives the dog the impression that you own the window and he shouldn’t bark out the window.
