I have a very sick miniature schnauzer and need some reassurance.?
ByHe is almost 3 years old. Late Monday he had his yearly shots. Then around Wed/Thurs he started not acting like he was feeling well… then he started vomiting on Thursday night and Friday. He does have a sensitive stomach so we did not think much about it. By Saturday he was getting worse, but no vet here on Sat or Sun. By Monday morning he would not eat or drink anything. We took him into the vet and they started IV fluids and running blood test. The vet told us it was a problem caused by his heart Murmur. That his heart is having to work harder than it should and causing blood to back up in his liver causing his liver enzymes to be high. We brought him home last night and started him on his heart medicine and liver medicine and no improvement, if anything he is worse. Today he is completely lethargic, refuses to eat, so not my normal, happy, energetic dog. My husband just rushed him back to the vet, because he is so lethargic he will not even move, his tongue is hanging out of his mouth. I am so worried that my little dog is not going to make it and his is just like a child to us. Please anyone that has had any similar experience or any advice help me! Thanks

While I have no experience with this, just wanted you to know I’m thinking of you and your boy.

Hi Alicia. I’m sooooo very sorry to hear about your dog. I had a Schnauzer when i was growing up named Heidi, and i’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for them. They are very sweet dogs. It sounds like you are doing everything you possibly can do right now, so i don’t know of any other advice i can give to you. Taking him to the vet was definitely the right thing to do. I understand about pets being like children to us, i feel the same way. I hope and prey he’ll be ok. You hang in there < <>>

Couple of questions for you:
Did the vet notice a heart murmur when he checked him out on Monday? Right sided heart failure will cause a backup of blood systemically, and as the liver has very little capacity to absorb the excess blood, it is often the first place to see problems.
How was he at the vets? Did he get very stressed?
Other than the shots, was he given any medication on Monday? Any deworming? Heart worm meds? etc?
I know you didn’t say it (but I’m sure someone else will say it…), but this doesn’t sound like a vaccine reaction to me.
