I took my cat to a free clinic;a dog peed on the cat carrier;can my cat get an infection?

By

I don’t know if the dog had its shots or not. Only a drop or two got inside. Is my cat safe?

Probably not, unless the dog had some sort of bladder infection. If you’re really concerned, you can buy some bath wiped form the pet store. They’re like.. baby wipes, but made for non bath cat washing. Give her a quick rub down with one of those.

Unlike poop, which is laden with microorganisms, urine is basically sterile. The followers of Mao Zidong drank their own urine to avoid dying of thirst on the Long March, with no ill effect. You could, too, if you could get over the ick factor. It’s a barrier for me, as well.

Your cat is thoroughly disgusted, but safe.

There are very few diseases which are contagious between cats and dogs, and of those that are they require more aggressive transmission (ie biting, as with rabies). You’ll probably find your cat is more offended than infected!
If your cat is still stressed about the incident, there are some good products to help. Homeopet Anxiety drops are natural, and can take away some of the anxiety of the situation (also good for vet visits and car trips too!).
Urine-off is an excellent product – they have sprays to remove urine from carpets/floors, which you can use on the carry cage, and also have wet wipes, which you can use on your cat to remove traces of urine. It actually breaks-down the particles of urine, completely elliminating it.
But rest assured – apart from being completely appalled (as I would be if I had be peed on!), your cat should be fine. :)

if you were at the free clinic, then why didn’t you ask an expert, as opposed to a bunch of un-credible people

Very, very few things pass between dogs and cats, and none of them (that I’m aware of) through urine. Still, that’s pretty gross, but bleach will take care of it. Mix up a solution of 10% bleach to water, and wash the carrier, then rinse. Any germs will be killed by that concentration of bleach. Shame on the dog’s owner for not having him under better control.
