My dog has had a pretty bad ear infection all his life please help, he is 10 years old now, to old to go under anesthesia. he crys everyday trying to scratch it. i need pills that will uninflame his ear. any ideas?
i have gone to a veteranarian and he said that there is nothing they can do because he will have it all his life no matter what, they just cleaned his ear out and thats about it. we did get pills one time and they worked very well, im going to take him to the vet TODAY!!!!!!!
i have gone several times to the vet to get his ears clean, it seems that its just costing me 1000′s of dollars just for them to clean his ears and say theres nothing they can do, last time i went was maybe last year because he has been on these pills that helped him. but now we have to get a percription to get some more.
there is no way my german shepherd will let me clean his ears, if i touched the base or went a little bit inside his ear he would cry.

5

no pills….but

mix 1/2 Vinegar and 1/2 Rubbing Alcohol together in a squirt bottle, squirt some in his ear and rub his ears around, then whipe his ears with a paper towel, do this about once a week

6

Please see your Vet and he can show you how to keep your dog’s ears clean.

7

antibiotics? anitinflamtory drugs like a pain reliever? what does your veterinarian say?

8

Stop abusing that poor animal and get him to a veterinarian immediately!

Oooh..I’m a dog and i’ve had that before…I HATE it, my owners eardrum exploded once so we can relate, she but earwash in my ear and gave me these nasty antibiodics but it cured me in a few days.

Why did you wait so long to treat this problem..
Why didnt the dog go to the vet? Thats really what you need to do..
Please take the dog to the vet. They will tell you the best way to do this.

In regards to keeping the ears clean, I’m assuming you have a floppy-eared dog. Groomers will do this for you so you don’t have to keep going to the vet. They can even pluck the hair if it needs it.

Ear infections are very common with these types of dogs (floppy-eared,) but you need to get a 2nd opinion from a different vet. I can understand a reoccuring infection, but a life-time one? That’s just not right.

if you want to save money and time get some ear drops (for humans)for your dog it works fast(in less than 2 weeks)

talk to your vet. ive owned cocker spaniels and other breeds with long floppy ears..you can get the ear cleaner yourself and clean your dogs ears.. as a dog owner you need to realize there is no simple fix for this! return to the vet that gave you those pills and tell them how well they worked..but right now your best bet is to clean the ears yourself..its not hard and your guy will love it!!

You really need to find another vet. This one sounds like a money grubbing whore.

My dog had bad ear infections. I had the same problem that you had with my first vet. I changed vets and the new one took a different approach. He cleaned out the ears but then we changed my dog’s diet since food allergies can actually cause ear infections. We changed him to Duck and Potato because it is a protein source that he has never had before. Besides absolutely loving the food his ear infections have not returned and it’s been 8 months.

It is difficult to change the diet because you have to remove everything including Kong treats, rawhide bones, pig ears, etc. You have to be very strict. It may be worth a shot though. Of course this won’t work without first having his ears cleaned thoroughly first.

You may want to try olive oil. My family and I use it for ear infections on ourselves and for any type of ear irritation for our cats. Our male cat gets infections sometimes and just about four or five drops in each ear does the trick. He stops scratching almost immediately and then that’s the end of it. I hope your dog finds some relief fast. Poor puppy!

I second the suggestion of a diet change, it’s true that ear infections are often related to allergies. You may have to try several before you find one that works.

If he does not have a ruptured ear drum, you can also try Blue Power Ear Treatment http://info.detnews.com/pbgv/ears.htm I’ve had very good luck with it.

With my allergy dog, I had to fix his diet first, because as long as he was dealing with the allergies the ear infections would come back as quickly as we cleared them up. His ears were so bad that they were oozing yellow pus and they would bleed if I tried to gently clean them with a soft cotton ball. Once his allergies were taken care of, the Blue Power cleared up the infections very quickly. I also used the vinegar/water mix mentioned on the recipe page, but it does seem to irritate the ears so I would use the vinegar first, then the Blue Power to soothe the ears. I noticed improvement in his ears within two days, after two weeks his ears were cleared up permanently.

blue powder ear wash
Note: The originator of this recipe is unknown. At this point it is a widely cited “folk remedy” which is highly effective in treating ear infections.

1 16 oz bottle of rubbing alcohol (pour off an inch to make some room)
8 to 16 drops Gentian violet (it’s real cheap, but hard to find – try next to the Iodine at a Mom & Pop Pharmacy or ask someone to order it)
4 Tbs. Boric Acid Powder (also cheap and found at the pharmacy)
Shake well and for convenience transfer some to a small (4 ounce) “spout” bottle. Each time you use it, shake the bottle well to make sure the powder is in suspension.

The Gentian Violet will stain, so be careful where you mix it and where you apply it to the dog’s ears.

If you’re treating an infection, you want to clean the ears with this mixture on a daily basis. Otherwise from once a week to once a month is usually enough to keep the ears healthy.
