Need help about dog chewing herself?

By

My dog likes to chew herself to the point where the fur comes off and her skin scabs up. Already had been treated for flees for about three months now and is still receiving the treatment but I just cant figure out what is causing her to do it and how to stop it any help? My dog is a shiba inu if you needed to know.

my dog has done the same thing….take her to the vet and they can either put a bandage around it whether they cant chew on it…or something else along those lines!!

That sounds like allergies. The most common ones are environmental allergies (fleas, grasses, dust, pollen, etc) or food allergies (corn, wheat, soy, etc). Ask your vet about testing her for allergies. Allergies are very common in Shibas. http://www.peteducation.com/category_summary.cfm?cls=2&cat=1587

Another possibility would be mites or mange. Your vet can test for these also.

sigh………it doesn’t have HANDS so has to use it’s teeth.
Even one flea bite can cause itching on sensitive/allergy dogs& you didn’t mention *any* premises treatment. Topicals ONLY kill the flea that bites!!!

I have seen this before in dogs. Often, it is a nervous/stress condition and can be treated. There are some sprays you can get (or vet can recommend) to help. One of my dogs did it to his stub tail. They are generally referred to as “hot spots.”
Good luck!

has your dog had a good life? i just ask because before we got our dog the people would lock him in there laundry all day so hes scared of being alown & he chews his leg alot!! the vet said he chewes himself because of anxiety.. evan tho he doesnt have anything to be worried about anymore, these things stick with animals.

I don’t know why puplove got a thumbs down.. she’s exactly right. It’s more than likely allergies. Dogs don’t sneeze and rub their eyes like we do.. they itch.

I agree with her, take her to the vet and get some allergy panels.

Common food allergies are:
Corn
Wheat
Soy
The most common protein allergen is chicken… if you are already feeding a good quality, corn, what, soy free food, it’s more than likely a protein allergy. Switch up the protein source.

Put a cone around they’re neck for a while
So that they can’t scratch it away further : ]
