Our dog was outside for a few hours yesterday and we don’t know where he went, now he’s acting weird. Rabies?
ByI let the dog out yesterday and he was out for a good 3 hours, during that time we tried to call him in but he wouldn’t come and we don’t know where he went. Usually he comes right in when we call him. Anyways, we live near a forest and there are tons of strays and wild animals near the house. Jake, the dog, goes after the smaller animals and kills them when he can. He came in last night, and now this morning he is acting strange, shaking his head a lot, not listening to us, and switching back and forth from being relaxed and laying down to being anxious looking and pacing.
Could it be rabies? How early do symptoms show up from the time the animal gets infected?

Get him to the vet. Now! I dunno if its rabies.. but any change in mental status.. dog or human.. usually isn’t good!

He could have eaten just about anything out there ranging from animals to poison. Take the dog to the vets and get him checked out.

NO,it is NOT!!!!!!!!
The virus CAN’T show any symptoms this soon! That’s absurd.

1) the dog would have had to be bitten to GET rabies. So check his body. No bites, no rabies.
2)I would assume that your dog is fully vaccinated, which would include rabies shots. If you haven’t done that, you NEED to. In the USA it’s a law that dogs be rabies vaccinated. If the dog has had it’s shot, even if bitten, it won’t get rabies.

No. there is no way symptoms for rabies would show up in les than 24 hours. It can take up to 10 day to show symptoms. Are his vaccines caught up? It could also be any number of problems- check him over carfully for bites or cuts. And consider a trip to the vet if the symptoms do not resolve by tomorrow. But I ‘m sure this is not rabies- way too early.

Take him to the vet I think it usually takes a month for the signs to show but he could have gotten it earlier.

Check his ears thoroughly. Shaking the head is an ear thing. Wouldn’t worry abt rabies….look for bite marks if you are. If he continues to act weird…go to the vet.

Not likely. Rabies is a virus and takes a few weeks to multiply to the point where a dog would be affected by it.
Something else has the dog on edge.

The head shaking could be ticks in his ears. Check his body over and if he does not get better consult your vet. And, if he is not vaccinated, have it done Today!

Have the vet check for Lyme Disease or Ear Mytes it isn’t rabies. He could have ate something that upset his stomach which is why he would be anxious
