sick border collie… no clue whats wrong?
Byi took my dog to the vet the other day cause i have noticed shes been acting really odd. drinking 6-7 bowls of water a day, the bowl is a medium size bowl and normally i wouldnt have to fill up but once or twice. shes half border collie and half austrailian sheppard so shes very hyper, but here lately she gets very tired very fast. shes only 3. so the first thing i though of was heart worms. i made the appt to get her tested for that, to get her rabies shot , and to get heart worm prevention is case the test was negative. the dr went ahead and did an annual check up on her anyways and found out that she was running a fever but didnt tell me of what degree. shes negative on worms and he ran a test for other parasites and thats negative also. the only thing i know i have done different with her is change her diet from straight up dry food to dry mixed with canned. but she got diarrhea and i immediately stopped the canned food after that. the dr gave me anti biotics and told me that it might be diabetes or pancreatic infection … i googled both and she isnt showing any signs of those things. the only thing is shes a lil bit over weight, which would make sense for the diabetes, so they told me to put her on a diet. im taking her back next week for another appt. does anyone know what could be causing this so i can ask the dr about it??? she has had a runny nose and sneezing… can dogs gets colds? any help is great. this dog is my child =) i dont know what id do with out her. im sooo worried!

I can not answer this because the only way to know for your dogs health is the vets follow up, but hope she gets better. My dogs are all small, but they do get colds really easy, especially when I keep my heat turned down, and my mini schnauzer gets runny nose and drinks a lot, I started taking the water away at night time, but never had a fever, besides once for false pregnancy.

Yes, dogs get colds and the flu.
if he/she has a runny nose and is sneezing,, the’re cold/ flu symptoms.
it will go away, just let it relax and make sure it is warm.

Diabetes sounds most likely. There could be a problem with her thyroid gland, and that could contribute to her weight…I would take her back to the vet and have something called a geriatric or comprehensive profile done, its a basic blood panel that will check the levels of your dogs organs. They can also send out urine with the comprehensive to check the glucose levels. Or your dog could just have a cold. But the excessive drinking doesn’t quite fit. Hope this helps, and I don’t want to scare you. Your dog will be fine

The reason the vet did tell you his temp, dogs run high compared to humans. Dogs common cold is call bordetella aka kennel cough, the flu is called canine parainfluenza. If your dog gets it’s yearly shots both these are covered with the yearly 5-1 or 7-1 combo vaccines, vaccines are not always 100% though… The diarrhea was probably caused by the sudden food modification, if she has been eating a diet all her life just a 50/50 change would cause a little GI shock. What do you feed, sometimes this is made worse when the switch is a consumer * food to premium food. check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com. * food is normally 1 or 2 stars at dog food analysis. I consider 5 star or above premium food.
3 seems young for a BC/Aussie to have diabetes, your girl would need to be really overweight, I would think… Your vet will need run the proper tests to figure out if this is the true cause. drop me a msg and keep me updated.
