My dogs dont’ have fleas but contracted tapeworms from eating a flea infested dead squirrel they found on the trail. I wonder how the tape worm egg got into the flea.
Does anyone know how wild animals, coyotes, squirrels, etc. thrive with a tapeworm? Are some animals immune to tapeworms? My dogs were ravenous until treated. How do wild animals cope?
My dogs were treated with 5 tablets of 34mg Praziquantel and were drinking water all day – seemed very dehydrated. Is this one of the side effects?

My dog hasn’t been acting right…scratching…losing hair on ears, tails, and nose….thought it was mange…still could be…going to doctor monday….My dog pooped and I saw blood but only in small amount…then I saw some kind of red wrapper in the stool as well…I threw it away…She pooped again and I looked again…small sign of blood again but not as much as before but this time I noticed what looked to be like a tape worm. Can I get this too?…and are there any other worms that look like a tape worm..its got that “segment” look about it…I saved it to take it to the vet monday…will my dog be ok till then? I gave her a small pinch of Garlic powder in her food and I’m giving her Ice chips to keep her hydrated
the garlic powder is how i found the tapeworms…

My year and a half black lab/pointer mis is usually very energetic, and today he has been acting very strange. He will not eat, drink, nor eat his favorite treat. He just wants to lay down, and sleep. He also had blood shot eyes. We are planning on taking him to the vet in the morning if this persists. Any insight on what may be going on? Or what to expect from the vet?

Here’s the deal…I had diagnostic blood work done on my 2 year old pit bull. The ALP level was severely low.

I know that when ALP levels are really low it could be one of several things: genetic bone defect, liver disease (ruled out), a dog being anemic (ruled out), malnutrition (ruled out), hypothyroidism (ruled out) , celiac disease, magnesium or zinc deficiency, menopause (ruled out because my dog is a neutered male.)

The only things that I have yet to rule out are the magnesium and zinc levels and the celiac disease.
The blood test alone just to check zinc levels is $180…I CAN NOT AFFORD THAT! I can do a magnesium test, because it is only $35…and I have no idea what Celiac Disease is, I have never heard of it! Can they even do a test to determine if he has Celiac Disease? (I don’t think I spelled it right!)

Can anybody shed any new light on Alkaline Phosphatase levels for me and the severely low range blood results?

His result is less than 5 and the normal ranges are from 20 to 150. I spoke with three different vets in my area about this and I knew way more about it than they did…weird seeing how I am just a concerned canine mother with no vet training whatsoever.

It is really scary to me, cause I feel if ALP levels were not important, then it would not be measured on diagnostic blood work. It’s on there for a reason, right?

Another important thing, I should add, is that the symptoms of low ALP levels in dogs are rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, intolerance to cold, severe weight loss, constipation and fatigue. My dog has ALL of these symptoms but one, severe weight loss.

If I can not figure out what is causing my dog’s low ALP levels…just the symptoms alone could prove fatal long term.

Can anyone shed any new light on any of this for me! Any Veterinarians or Vet Techs out there that have dealt with this before or either just have knowledge or suggestions for me?

I appreciate your help in this area and I would like to humbly thank you in advance! I know this is not an easy topic…lol!

Oh yeah, by the way, his other results of his Blood Work were within their normal ranges, but a few, and they were really close to being normal!

This is the first time my dog has had any ear promblems. I called a vet immediately and cannot get a appointment till tuesday. I asked if it was okay to clean her ear with the usual stuff i clean her ears with that the vet gave. It was ok & so i did. I didnt see any cuts. A hour later her ear was filled with dried & wet dark red stuff. Is she bleeding??? It finally stopped now. Does anyone know of what could be wrong? What natural remedys are good for this?
The vet said not to worry if it was that bad my dog would not let me be touching her ear. She is letting me touch her ear and clean it. I still think i want to check out other vets in the morning and find a sooner appointment. I still appreciate any advice anyone can give me.
Thank you

He is 4 years old and I have only given him rice and chicken for the last 2 days, which he is happily eating but he’s still getting bouts of it around 5/6 times a day in small amounts. We had to have our older dog put down at the weekend, could the trauma of this be affecting him?

Dried blood around female boxer’s cage?

Posted by: | Comments (3)

I have 3 dogs – a male and 2 females. Both females have been spayed for several years. The female Boxer sleeps in a kennel between her mate (male Boxer) and a female terrier. That’s where I found this tarry, blackish purple colored stuff in a thin layer just outside her cage this morning. It was dry and flaky looking. Just yesterday I’d washed out all the cages. There was also a small pile (this morning) of what looked like might be excrement, also tarry and blackish. So I’m suspecting a bloody stool. I washed it out after work and it had that bloody smell similar to when she gave birth to her litters. She’s 8 years old. She wasn’t her peppiest today but then again, didn’t seem to be sick either. What could be going on with her?
