Put ill border collie to sleep, now or later?
Posted by: | CommentsWe have a 12 year old border collie, with a large cancer tumor on her right side lower jaw area. Part of the tumor was taken out, but extracting the rest would’ve ment taking out portions of her jaw. The tumor is increasing in size causing her lip to sag and is also spreading down her neck. When she uses her jaw too much {barking, eating} the skin covering the tumor erupts a bit and it bleeds a little. The vet has put her on a series of pain meds and antibiotics. She is still an active and alert dog. She doesn’t act like she is in any pain, she can still eat soft dog food.
My question is, When is the best time to put her to sleep? I don’t want to wait till the cancer breaks her jaw, but I don’t want her to suffer either. What is your opinion for this situation?
Blue Merle or Blue/White Border Collie Puppy Wanted?
Posted by: | CommentsI’m looking for a Blue Merle or Blue/White Border Collie puppy. If you are a breeder or know someone who has a litter or a litter or puppies on the way I would appreciate some contact details.
I recently lost my 13y/o Border Collie & although I understand that colours arent always important it will also help me to move on from my girl. I used to be a vet nurse also and take wonderful care and great pride in my dogs.
I am located in Parkdale, Victoria (Australia) but am willing to travel so if you can lend a helping hand Id really appreciate it! Thanks ; )
Why does my dog (an 15 yr old border collie) chew the branches on bushes and trees?
Posted by: | CommentsShe is 15 years old, and has been chewing on lower branches (more like twigs), and then spitting them out. She will stay in one spot while doing it, and has done it to multiple trees and shrubs. She will be nochalant about it and then other times visciously shake her head from side to side trying to tear it off the tree.
We have plenty of trees and shrubs and have never seen a pattern of it (like after meals or before meals, or before bed.) She does it randomly, when she feels like it. She will stop if you tell her to. Obviously, she is a border collie so she is smart and is doing this for a reason. She has never liked chew toys or even toys– just her soccer ball to chase.
So why is she doing this?

Small Ulcer-like Sore on Inside of my Border Collie’s Ear?
Posted by: | CommentsI have three dogs and I noticed one dog has been licking the border collie’s ear. Knowing this is usually a classic ear irritation symptom I cleaned out her ears really well with K9 Liquid Health’s ear cleaner. Her ears were relatively clean even then, meaning not a lot of “goop” was found. I repeated the cleaning for a few days after that until they seemed to be back to normal. Tonight I noticed that the dog was again licking the ear. I cleaned it out and once again there was minimal “goop” and seemed relatively clean. Then I noticed a small (about a 1/4 in. long) ulcer like sore on the inside of her ear folds. The sore isn’t on the flap of the ear, but is not deep down in the actual canal either. It just looks like a little ulcer type sore. I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to dogs, but this one has me stumped. Her ear does not smell at all (no yeasty smell) and there is not much discharge like typical ear infections. This sore just worries me a little. She just turned 3 years old and is groomed regularly. She is perfectly fine in every other aspect (eating, drinking, pooping etc.) so I am not going to rush her in to see the vet. We live in the desert so the weather is cool right now but no rain or snow obviously. She hasn’t had a bath in a month so water couldn’t have gotten in her ear recently.
Any idea on what the heck this sore could be or what is causing it?
Thanks, I’m glad I’m not the only one scratching their head. I think I am going to keep a close eye on it and see what happens and if it isn’t getting better she will go see her vet soon. For now I have been giving her Newton’s Homeopathic Ear Care to help relieve the symptoms and just keeping it clean. She already eats a high quality food, so I really don’t think it’s a food issue. Hopefully it will resolve itself, after all nobody likes forking out $100 at the vet but if she needs to go she will.

sick border collie… no clue whats wrong?
Posted by: | Commentsi took my dog to the vet the other day cause i have noticed shes been acting really odd. drinking 6-7 bowls of water a day, the bowl is a medium size bowl and normally i wouldnt have to fill up but once or twice. shes half border collie and half austrailian sheppard so shes very hyper, but here lately she gets very tired very fast. shes only 3. so the first thing i though of was heart worms. i made the appt to get her tested for that, to get her rabies shot , and to get heart worm prevention is case the test was negative. the dr went ahead and did an annual check up on her anyways and found out that she was running a fever but didnt tell me of what degree. shes negative on worms and he ran a test for other parasites and thats negative also. the only thing i know i have done different with her is change her diet from straight up dry food to dry mixed with canned. but she got diarrhea and i immediately stopped the canned food after that. the dr gave me anti biotics and told me that it might be diabetes or pancreatic infection … i googled both and she isnt showing any signs of those things. the only thing is shes a lil bit over weight, which would make sense for the diabetes, so they told me to put her on a diet. im taking her back next week for another appt. does anyone know what could be causing this so i can ask the dr about it??? she has had a runny nose and sneezing… can dogs gets colds? any help is great. this dog is my child =) i dont know what id do with out her. im sooo worried!
how do i get my border collie to get along with other dogs?
Posted by: | CommentsMy boyfriend and I own a border collie that has just turned a year old.
He’s very friendly to people and just loves company. He is not in any way aggressive to humans.
But for the last month i’ve been taking him with my boyfriend to a place called ‘pooch park’, which is where all dogs can come to hang out together in a caged off park.
Ever since we started taking him he will not let any dog come near him. If they do approach him his eyes bulge out, his tail is stuck between his legs, his lips curled, and he goes to nip them away (yes we do protect other dogs from bites by using a muzzle.)
I keep bringing him, twice a week because that’s the only time we can really fit in because we are both school students.
I take people’s advice on what to do, and I try so hard to do it. But my border collie just seems to want to follow us around instead of enjoying the other dogs company.
He has a brother at home (not blood related) that is a west highland terrier/maltese and he gets along with him 100% perfect.
He’s a beautiful border collie.. and I want him to be able to have fun with other dogs without feeling threatened or scared.
Keeping in mind that we have had him since he was 12 weeks old and nothing has happened to make him the way he is.
I know that most people are going to say ‘dog training’ but that is a difficult option for me and my boyfriend seeing we have school, soccer, and we obviously dont earn a lot of money to pay for it.
Can someone please give me something to work with, Brumby is a gorgeous boy, and I want him to enjoy other dogs.
Please help me !
Why does my border collie have black spots on his gums?
Posted by: | CommentsHe’s a 2 year old full bred black and white border collie. He has light gray/black spots underneath some of his teeth on his gums and around his mouth (like his doggie lips lol). He was away from me on a farm for like a year and I don’t really know what happened. I try not to let him eat things from outside but he’s a dog..Is this something to worry about?
