german shep x just had biopsy surgery in anal area….?
Posted by: | CommentsI do realise I’m probably over reacting. She’s my grandmothers dog I’m minding while grandmother away overseas.
the dog is 6.5, had biopsy surgery today to diagnose suspected anal fistula/furunclosis. the area is driving her crazy. shes on tramadol (pain killer – i know from taking myself its very strong and has, for me anyway, quite nasty side effects) and I’ve been told I can get sedatives to help keep her calm while she recovers BUT
she’s so flexible (she’s crossed with kelpie) she’s able to work her way around the cone collar to get at the area. I don’t want to irritate it too much by constantly inspecting it, but while I’d expect it to be swollen, I have no idea what a dog’s anus should look like, much less after surgery, and it seems to be weepy or possibly even fecal incontinence??
I’m terrified to even leave her alone while I sleep incase she rips something open over night. And I have to go out to appointments tomorrow, and I’m not sure how I can do that with the stress of leaving her alone.
I can’t call the vet for another 9hrs, otherwise I’d be on the phone, not on here.
Any advice at all? What should/can I do to ease her pain? I’ve spent a lot of time just trying to soothe her and keep her calm, but I have my own pain issues and my options are limitied. She also has serious mental issues – anxiety etc. Vets words were GSD’s fear issues crossed with kelpies’ psychosis are a bad mix.
I am Brazilian.

1. In German, to say “take care of”, what’s the difference among “sorgen für”, “sich kümmern um” and “pflegen”? Are they interchangeable?
2. How to say in German?
a) I have taken care of my mother’s house.
b) Take care of the children, please. (imperative)
c) The dog will take care of our house.
d) The nurse takes care of the patient.
e) I take care of my body.
f) Take care when you leave school at night. The way home is too dangerous.

Best dog food for my German Shepherd?
Posted by: | CommentsHello! I have a female German Shepherd that just turned 3 in March. We’ve been feeding her Dog Chow for a while now. But, after this weekend-i heard what its actually made of and its kind of scaring me. She’s in overall very good health, so is there no problem with it unless she starts having problems or should i change it anyway? Obviously better dog food will be more expensive, but if it makes her feel good, its worth it. Also wondering whats the best vitamin/hip supplements that i could be giving her for all around better health. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
My 3 year old female GSD has on a couple occasions, had an inflamed ear which the Vet prescribed droplets which I gave her 2X day for one week to cure it. Her scratching her ears and giving a groan alerted me to the matter both times. I live in the southern desert of Arizona and I notice sometimes she will shake her head as if to try and dislodge something from her ears. I did a little on line research and found this procedure for balancing the Ph in a dog’s ears. I wonder if I follow this procedure (outlined below, from Daily Puppy’s site) regularly whether it might relieve whatever it is that is causing her to shake her head, and may even help prevent any further issues with inflammation. Mindy, of course, does not have long ears, but they are large and can be often erect/ straight up.
How To Balance the Ph In a Dog’s Ears
Step 1:
Prepare your dog for the cleaning by touching its ears, lifting up the flaps and looking inside the ears once a day for two to three days before the cleaning. Give your dog praise when it does not bark or yelp during this process. This will help your dog become accustomed to having its ears handled before you attempt any cleaning.
Step 2:
Combine 4 oz. of rubbing alcohol, 1 Tbsp. of glycerin and 2 Tbsp. of powdered boric acid in a small bottle.
Step 3:
Place the cap onto the bottle and shake the mixture vigorously. The boric acid in the mixture will help balance the pH in the dog’s ears.
Step 4:
Pour a few ounces into one of the dog’s ears and massage the base of the ear for 25 seconds. Stand back and allow the dog to shake its ears after this procedure. This is how the dog prevents any liquid from entering its inner ear.
Step 5:
Repeat on the second ear.
Step 6:
Wipe out any areas inside the dog’s earflaps that remain covered with the solution with a cotton ball. Do not place a cotton swab into the dog’s ears as this could cause damage to the delicate inner ear.
Step 7:
Perform this cleaning once a month if your dog does not have long ears.
What is the best dog food to feed my German Shepherd and why?
Posted by: | CommentsAside from cooking her meat myself, what’s the best quality dry dog food? I just spent $45 on a bag of Royal Canin, and Costco’s dog food has chicken & chicken meal as the 1st 2 ingredients, while Royal Canin’s 2nd ingredient is rice!
what is the correct age for german shepard dog’s teeth fully grown?

Crate training my german shepherd mix puppy!?!?!?
Posted by: | CommentsHi…I think i posted a question like this before but anyway here goes….
I have a german shepherd mix puppy. I got him about a week ago. he was a stray and i don’t know if he was abused or not but he was very very skinny.
We took him in and since he’s going to be a very large dog i would like to crate train him. (i bought this crate for my lab/dalmation and i only put him in there when i leave because he’s very distructive) When i put my puppy in there…i have a divider to make sure he only has enough space to turn around and lay down comfortably. He barks and whines and cries and i know they say to ignore it….but how can i when i have neighbors? I mean i don’t want to disturb anyone and i’m pretty sure they can hear him when he’s in there. It sounds so awful…he howls and cries and it sometimes sounds like someone is really abusing him. What should i do? LIke i said i don’t want to disturb my neighbors…thats all i’m concerned about *Sigh*….am i crate training him correct?
I put his food in there and he knocks it over…and i also put a bone in there for him…and…I put a radio in there for him because i heard that human voices can keep him company…i even tried putting a blanket over his crate because they said that it wouldn’t be so loud if i did that….
GERMAN SHEPHERD PUP Q’s!?
Posted by: | Commentsshes a flea market pup, but she is pure bred, met both parents, shes mostly black with brown legs and some brown one her face, her parents were both brown with black like regular GSD’s, will she change? shes about 3 months old and all fluffy
i also have an 8 month old male brindle pit mix who’s an outside dog. i got her 4-21-11
so here are my questions, first time owning a GSD
1. she liked to eat poop? what do i do
2. my pit mix is always excited no matter his walks! mostly 45 minutes long.. and he always wants to play with her! he licks her face a lot and pretends to nip her to get her to play, sometimes she plays, mostly she ignores it, and on some occasions she growls and barks cuz hes very pushy!
-he hops over her, puts his butt in her face, lays with her, shares his food, he tries to do everything with her, but she hardly eats or defecates around him, what do i do about him!? i got to separate him so she can eat and pee!
3. whats the best way to potty train her? im doing crate training! sleeps in a crate, i take her out to pee and poo, then she comes in and plays with max (pit) then she eats, and is put back in the crate, she sleeps, she wakes, i take her out to poop and pee again, and do that over and over. its a routine, sometimes i make her walk to the door and scratch it so she learns to go on her own :\ i tell her “go potty!” when we go out, and when she goes i say “good potty!” and let her in to play and roam freely! will she learn to not poo inside from this? is there a better method?
4. When we got max, we were going to get him puppy chow, the lady at the pet store said it is a HORRIBLE choice of dog food because of the corn, so she told us to feed max Chicken soup for the Puppy lovers soul..is that okay for both my pit and gsd?
5. how do i train her now, to be an obedient gsd? my cousin keeps telling me shes gonna grow huge and be out of control because thats how all the gsd’s hes met acted, how do i make sure shes obedient and a great family dog! our pit used to nip, jump up on people and pull on leashes, but he doesnt bite people unless he’s roughhoused but he does it playing, so were gonna do the same we did with him, yelping and walking away. we were pretty strict with the word “DOWN” when he gets on people, he’s getting better! and on leashes when he pulls we walk the opposite way so he knows the pulling thing
i hope we can do that with Leah (gsd)
6. what are the best products to get her? as for food, toys, bedding, brushes(big shedder), leashes, Since shes gonna grow up pretty fast i want things to last!
7. how does our family avoid diseases? like hip dysplasia, problems with her heart? blood? bones? joints? i want her to be a healthy pup! havent taken her to the vet but i also plan on asking him!
8. what do we do with her when no one is home? adults work and kids go to school, 7 hours for each at least, i dont wanna leave her in the crate to have an accident, and i dont want to leave her with max, he’ll be way too rough with her to leave her alone with him for that long? She cries SO BAD when she doesnt see anyone near her……and im thinking of tying max up so she can roam the yard without being stalked….or pinned down. what should i do
PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
i just wanna know what to expect, what to do, how to act, and so far shes a cute little pup and shes funny! and our family is warming up to her greatly! and she loves us too!
