Archive for heart

Hello people who own computors and are hopefully nice enough to answer my question! lol. Anyway, I have a little 2-year-old black and white dog. It is a Shi-Tzu and POSSIABLY mixed with a Lasa-Apsa. She keeps making a honking sound when she is active. Is this typical for this breed? We thought she had Kennel Cough, and got her medication. It worked. Then, we ran out and now she is honking again. Could she have Heart Worms?! What are the symptoms and treatment for Heart Worms in dogs? Please, and Thank You!
I already took the dog to the vet. The test is expensive, and to much money. Does anybody know the symptoms of Heart Worm Disease in dogs?

My family adopted a heart worm positive dog from a local shelter. She had the treatment three months ago and ever since the treatment she has never acted “right”. She is overly scared of everything. Always looks as if she is crazy. I’m wondering if the treatment, which is arsenic based, melted my poor puppy’s brain. Has anyone else had this problem with a dog after heart worm treatment?
The shelter had told me that she had tested negative for heart worm when we got her. I took her to the vet for a physical a week after we adopted her and they ran the normal tests. They tested her for heart worm and she was positive. After discovering this, I called the shelter and after telling them that she had heart worm and that the papers that they gave me had false information about the heart worm test on them, the person who worked at the shelter hung up on me. So we had no help from the shelter. I did my own research and haven’t read anything about the treatment affecting any dog’s mental health but it might not be documented. Her “symptoms” of not being “normal” come in waves though. She’ll be “normal” for a few days then she’ll go weeks of being antisocial and hiding.

My 13-y-o, 2.4 kg. Maltese has kidney and heart disease. She’s constantly thirsty and should be getting plenty of water for her kidneys, but the vet tells me to restrict her water to 300ml per day, because too much water places too much of a burden on her heart, a conclusion that he came to after examining her following diuresis. However, I read on one website that “water should never be restricted in a dog with heart disease”! Which advice should I follow? It’s breaking my heart to see my dog searching everywhere for water!

When to start dog on heart worm medicine?

Posted by: | Comments (8)

I live in Missouri so it is just now getting warm enough for fleas and ticks so I am starting my dog back on Frontline Plus but I’m not sure when to start Heart Guard. She is a 8lb pom who is only outside on average about 15 min a day. So I need to know when do mosquito’s start coming out? And when do they go away for winter? I really can’t afford to be buying expensive medicines that I don’t need right now. With the economy the way it is and all. I just am trying to be safe and save a little money at the same time but my dogs health comes first! Thanks for any help!

My vet prescribed Digoxin for my 6 lb. chichuahua. I was told to get Lanoxin 50 mcg/ml and give him 6 drops a day–3 in the morning and 3 in the evening after meals. This seems excessive to me and he recently had some sort of spell/fit. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I just got our dog 3 weeks ago, she is 8 yrs old. She has been with family, she came to me pregnant and with heart worms. She has delivered 2 puppies last Saturday, I have been feeding them and letting her taking care of them and stay with them, it seems as though they weren’t getting enough milk and one almost died. Since she has delivered the puppies, she has been breathing very heavily, and has developed a slight cough. Is she dieing? What can I do to make her more comfortable? Should I have her put to sleep?
I took her to the vet a week ago and that’s how we found out she had heart worms, he also told us that she has advanced heart worms. he told us that the treatment for her would cost us around 400.00 and he could not guarantee that she would survive. She is very weak and still trying to care for her puppies, i don’t want to take them away from her, that might stress her out even more. I don’t want to put my dog to sleep, shes been with the family for 8 years, but I also cant afford a 400.00 vet bill that we ain’t sure will work either. I want her to be comfortable, no pain…

I have been giving them heart worm pills for a few years now and now I heard that it’s a waste of money. If they’re in an enclosed yard, they are not at risk. Is that true?
