Dog heart enlargment! Please help!?

Posted by: | Comments (3)

I have a 7 year old spayed Westie. She was diagnosed with a left side heart enlargment although she shows no symptoms. She only coughs sometimes when running a lot, other than that it’s all fine.Could it be that she was born with this? She is not very active by nature. She also has a narrow trachea (I hope I spelled it right?)but again no symptoms of any kind so far. She sleeps well, has no trouble breathing, totally normal.I live in Sarajevo, Bosnia and they do not do adittional tests here, just told me to come back when she develops the symptoms. I plan to take her to another vet somewhere else and would like to know what adittional test need to be done to determine her condition and is there anything I can do to prevent the symptoms from developing later on in her life?? THANKS SO MUCH!! I really appreciate it.
PS. She is just a bit overweight but does not eat a lot at all, she is just not active and she gained weight after being spayed.

help!
my medium sized, mixed breed, 11 month old dog (that i bottle fed from birth) who has never been ill has a face now covered in swollen bumps! her eyes seem to be closing up just a little and it hasn’t spread to the rest of her body – yet? i volunteer at an animal shelter, but i haven’t been for a few weeks (i have been studying for my end of year exams) so i don’t think she could have contracted it from there. her behaviour seems to be her normal, happy self, except that she is continually shaking her head. i’ve just noticed this – she was definitely not like this last night. i’ve isolated her (i have seven other dogs – excluding her) in my room until my mother comes back from grocery shopping. i’m afraid it may be mange or that she has been bitten by something. i’ve phoned my mother (she has had many, many years of experience in helping animals) and she has told me to give rosie an anti-histamine which she has now taken in a bit of liver patte. i’ve just managed to get her to lie down on a blanket in my bedroom, but i really need to get back to my studies. before my mother comes back and checks her out, is there anything i could do? please help! thanks!
p.s. i’m from south africa, so the things you may be suggesting might not be readily available. also, i’m only thirteen so i may not be able to do somethings…

thanks again.

Help with a dog Ear Infection?

Posted by: | Comments (5)

My 8 year old Yellow Labrador has had a an ear infection that causes itch, pain, and gives off a terrible smell for years. There of course were ear cleansers and antibiotics that worked for him but they’re to expensive at the moment. Ever since, he’s been having random “attacks” when he breathes heavily, the stench becomes unbearable, he doesn’t stop scratching or shaking his head , and I guess the infection effects his equilibrium because he tilts his head and bumps into everything. The doctor says that this is likely a food allergy, but we’ve cut off all food except the recommended medicated dog food we get him. Can it be anything else? Is there anything that can be done for him? If so, what?

Help! Dog wakes me up ALL night!?

Posted by: | Comments (9)

I have a wonderful 3.5-year-old Border Collie/Australian shepherd mix male dog. We got him from the humane society about a year ago. He loves people, and his favorite thing to do is be petted and go for walks. He doesn’t much care for playing or other dogs.

Anyway, he has started waking us up throughout the night. I know this is not a pee/poop issue because when we let him out, he doesn’t go. In the past, he didn’t seem too interested in being in the yard, and even now, he usually just lies on the porch right by the door. However, ever since summer started, he has wanted to do nothing but go outside. During the day, if I put him out, it’s almost impossible to get him back in without a treat. We take him for 2 walks a day usually — one in the morning, one in the evening.

But ever since summer started, he’s begun waking up really early 4ish and whining, pacing, shaking his head, stamping his feet, trying to get us up. He has the run of the house at night but is not allowed in our bedroom, so he stands on the wood floor outside the door, whining and emphatically stamping his feet. We try to ignore it and had hoped he would learn this wouldn’t get him his way, but he continues to do it.

I think it has to do with the early-morning light to some extent, and he may be a little warm inside. He’s also shown less interest in eating lately — he’s more intent on watching us to see if we’ll take him out for a walk! I don’t know what to do, and I’m exhausted. I can’t get enough sleep at night like this, and it’s really affecting my life. What can I do???!!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I’m sure it’s not an issue of having to pee. He basically only wants to go when we go for walks, so even when he’s outside, he rarely goes, and if you put him out at night, he’ll just stand by the door. He clearly isn’t wanting out to go potty.

As for the crate, we tried a crate for the first few nights, and he seemed to hate it. He whined the whole time, even though they said he was crate trained in his foster family. As someone said, I think he’s a pack animal, so putting him in the basement or in a crate will just make him unhappy. However, there is no way my husband and I can live with him in our bedroom. He would be wanting our attention 24/7. Instead of whining outside the door, he’d be poking us in the face. And he sheds so much that we’d don’t want that in the bedroom.

So… I guess we’ll try to run with him a little before bed. Any other suggestions?
The dog door is a great idea, but we live in the city, and I’d be worried about having it open all night.

I have a 6 month old doberman puppy. She chews the walls and destroying the carpet. I tried sprays and other things. I decided everytime she starts chewing on wall and carpet. I put the muzzle on for about 30 min. Hoping she will associate that this is what is going to happen if she chews on the walls and carpet. Has anyone tried this?

my dog is breathing fast and has rapid heart beat. Could it be because of his anti-diarrheal medicine or is it more serious? He is also looking a little confused, drooling and sticking his tongue out of the side of his mouth.

How to help dog feel better? (ear pain)?

Posted by: | Comments (7)

She has been shaking her head like crazy, and she is obviously experiencing pain in her left ear. The outer part of her ear was swollen. I bought some sort of dry powder that is supposed to relieve pain and have been putting it in her ear, and though the swelling went down, she is still whining and shaking her head.
She has a vet appointment, but I couldn’t get her in for another week and a half. Is there anything else I can do to help her? Any dog medications, or could I put neosporine (don’t know how to spell it, sorry) on the outer part of her ear? I don’t know if the problem is inside or out! There is nothing visibly wrong.
Don’t be retarded. I am taking my dog for professional help. I figured other pet owners (not perverts and the idiotic people of the world) could give me some temporary advice, since I’m shit out of luck as far as taking her to the vet for now.

Hi, I would try to be very brief with my story, my 15 year old dog woke up breathing heavily and kind of depressed, she didn’t eat at all and just drank some water. We took her to the doctor early morning and he told us she had a common cold, he recommended some antibiotics and vitamin C. She kept breathing heavily the whole day but since the doctor said she had a cold we supposed it was normal for her to act like that, about 10 minutes ago she had a bad episode, she started to roll around like crazy & drool a lot! We cuddled up with her and tried to keep her calm, her inferior legs kept shaking a bit while her breathing kept being heavy and profound. After a while she stopped shaking her inferior part & started to shake her head, her body feels cold. Right after the first seizure where she rolled around the house her nose was really hot and now it is kind of cold.
It’s almost midnight in my city, I tried to contact her vet but he refused to help me at this time, I really don’t know what to do, it’s the 1st time this happens to her and due to her advanced age I am afraid something worst might happen.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Help with dog’s ear…?

Posted by: | Comments (8)

Let me tell you the whole story…

I was in my backyard, and I saw my dog sniffing around in some bushes. Once we came inside the house, she kept on shaking her head (probably to clean out her ears). Now, she tilts her head to the left (possibly the ‘infected’ ear) and she won’t quit. I’ve looked inside her ear and I can’t really see anything.

What is wrong with her? PLEASE HELP. What should I do to help her?
I’ve put in a liquid ear cleanser I’ve used before when she had a past ear infection. But when I put it in her ear now , she starts to cry.
