Archive for months.

We never thought about this until recently. Our backyard has a lot of bushes and both our dogs like to chase each other around and through the bushes. Sometimes he gets his ears scratched up and even snagged in the branches and sticks. Is cropping the answer?

I own a two year old Boston Terrier and she has been in heat twice in three months. My vet said that they should only come into heat twice a year so I am very conserned, Is it possible that it could be an infection? She smells horrible, worse than ever before. Any advise would be very appreciated.

I have a 4 months old Shiba Inu / Husky mix. The recent brands of dog food ive been feeding him were Royal Canine puppy (Stopped because he was allergic to corn), Premium Edge puppy formula (doesn’t seem to like it.), Natural Balance Ultra Premium , and lastly Purina ProPlan puppy formula. He really liked Natural Balance and Purina ProPlan but, I was wondering are there better brands of dog food to feed to my pup? (with no corn as ingredients please)

I’m asking because we are trying to find a home for this little one, he is a papillon mix and ten weeks old. But the family who wants to adopt him wants to know if he will shed. If he’s not shedding now, is it possible for him to shed when gets a little older?

Spaying a Shih Tzu at 6 months or not?

Posted by: | Comments (8)

I have a 5 month Shih Tzu, and I got her with 4 months. She went to one appointment at a vet, and I only had once encounter with this doctor and he said that she should be spayed after her first heat. I then did research online to see the pros and cons with spaying at that time or before first heat. If she does it before the first heat she has a zero chance of mammary cancer, but I’ve read a few places that incontinence can occur.

If she gets spayed after the first heat, I have concern that it will be hectic keeping her safe from male dogs during that time. She’ll also have an 8% risk of having mammary cancer, but she’ll be older which being more mature can be good.

Since I’m not sure what to do, and because I need to decide this now. I called another known vet in the area to ask what the best age is… they tell me before the first heat at 6 months.

I see that vet opinions will vary, and in the end it is my decision. But I want to do the best thing for my pet.

If you have had experience with a small breed, and spaying… I’d appreciate advice.

due to the current state of the job market in my area both my girlfriend and I were laid off of work for a few months. things had to be cut back in order to make ends meet and one of those things was my dogs heart guard medication. now before anyone gets upset the decision was made due to the fact that it has been cold and dry for the past few months or so which means no mosquitoes in the area(the #1 cause of heart worm). now that things are better financially and it is heating up again the first thing i plan on doing is getting him back on heart guard. should i get him checked out first to make sure he(my dog) is safe to put back on it? or is it okay if he seems perfectly normal and there has been absolutely no mosquitoes in our area? i don’t want to waste money on a vet visit if there is no need to go, but if its the general consensus then i will to be on the safe side.

thanks in advance.

I am driving myself nuts trying to figure out her breed. My dog’s name is Sasha and I want to know if she may be full blooded or a mix of something.. I even thought she was hound when she was smaller. She is growing hugely. Her ears throw me off and her tail is more like german shepard.

I have a beautiful 4 month old puppy, that I love dearly! As a new dog owner, how do I take care of him? How do I train him to go potty on the grass instead of in the house? So far he had 6 accidents on my plush carpet! What healthcare measures do I take? This dog was a gift and did not come with instructions, but he is soo cute, I am pledging to love and care for him. Also how do I adjust his behavior to my young daughter? He likes to bite as a form of playing, has ripped my pant leg, and scratched the entire family up. How can we teach him to play nicely?
