Most of dog’s ear infections are yeast overgrowth, but they can be bacterial too.
Usually a good quality ear cleaner from your vet and Mometamax ear treatment once a day will clear it up.
If the vet didn’t send you home with ear cleaner and Mometamax, I would see another vet and get a second opinion. Ear ointments to clear up infections you usually can’t get without a prescription from your vet.
About your last comment:
Oh, that makes me mad! What a lazy vet! They should give you something when you are there! Not make you run around town looking for something! They should show you how to clean and treat the ears and give your dog the first dose of medication before he leaves the hospital.
Grrr! Sorry for the experience you had there.

Really, the only way is with antibiotics from your vet. Ear infections, if left untreated, can cause permanent hearing loss not to mention, it is very painful for the dog.
ADD:
Wow! I would find another vet. It is very discouraging that they are not willing to treat an ear infection. I certainly would not trust them with any future problems your dog may have.

You should definitely go to the vet so that the infection doesn’t spread to somewhere more vital, like his eyes or organs.
And, to prevent future infections, I’ve always cleaned my dog’s ears with q-tips. Just make sure you don’t go deep. Dog’s ears are a lot deeper and straighter than human ears. You’ll definitely know if you’ve gone too deep.

My step mom had the worst problems with our dogs regarding ear infections. I will tell you she went to the vet so many times and spent so much money. You may need antibiotics but be sure to use a PH balancing ear wash because none of the medicines worked for the dogs. They changed the food restricted their diet and this lasted for a long time and cost allot in vet bills. The one thing that worked was using a PH balancing ear wash and it was not that expensive, so start with the least expensive thing first. I hope your doggy gets well soon:)

My golden retriever has an ear infection also. There’s this cleaner stuff that I get at petsmart or petco or any petstore. You should clean the dogs ears probably once a day. Squirt it directly in the dog’s ear and massage his/her ears and then wipe it out with a tissue. It will most likely be dark brown and really smelly! Read the specific instructions for the product you get. Ask a vet.

Try Blue Power Treatment,

Ear cleaners, I like are Otic cleanse and R-7.
Also watch what is in the diet many dog food are the cause of ear infections.

Lastly, KNBC ran a story on vets and ear infections which has a video and is quite interesting. Seems many vets are charging way to much for unnecessary tests and claiming ear infections that are not there.

If your vet sent you to a pet store for meds and told you to ask them, I’d get a new vet.
If it’s an infection, the only thing that’s going to clear it up is antibiotics which you need a script for from a vet.

Why would your vet send you somewhere else for medicine for an infection?????? Otomax from the VET. Miracle ear drops ! My dog has chronic ear infections and I use this everytime it flares up and it helps immediately. It’s great!
