There is a product called “Swat” I apply to my dog’s ears. It stays put and keeps the flies off. I’ve also used vicks vapor rub. Just make sure they can’t lick their ears!
We had a German Shepard who ears would constantly get chewed up by flies. Our vet suggested a cheap, non-toxic, repellent, and healing agent. PINE TAR. It comes in a can, it is black and sticky and works for a really long time. It is also water proof so you don’t have to keep applying it a dozen times a day. You can find it at your local hardware store. Trust me it works great!!!!
At your vet’s office ask for an insecticide…i use PetGuard…it works great. It can be used on dogs and other animals such as horses. You want to shake the bottle really well before you use it and rub the product between your hands and apply a lot of it to the ears and whatever is left on your hands you should wipe on the remainder of the head
I use Permethrin on the ears. I use brands like Top Spot, and put 1/2 the tube on one ear and the other 1/2 on the other ear. It keeps flies away for up to one month. You can get the Swat if you want too, but you have to keep applying it throughout the month. It only last a few days. The Swat will also weigh the ears down. I also put Frontline plus on my dogs for flea control.

I use fly repellent. If you can’t find it for dogs look for horse; fly repellent.

Get some lavender oil and mix it with distilled water. Put it into a spray bottle and mist it on the ears. Insects hate lavender.;^)

You can save yourself some money and just use Vaseline on the ears. The flies cannot bite the dogs ears through the Vaseline.
