By

And as Ive read ingredient labels it appears that cat food is generally better than dog food of the same brand and usually has higher protein levels.

Yep, that is one of the reasons they are different. The protein level in cat food is way too high for a dog. Don’t feed the dog cat food.

2

Cats food contains an ingredient called taurine that is vital to cat’s health. The absence of taurine will cause eventual blindness due to degeneration of the retina as well as hair loss, tooth decay, and heart problems.

To clarify, it won’t hurt your dog to take a nibble now and then, but a steady diet of cat food is not healthy due to higher fat and protein levels. Dogs require plant products in their diets while cats do not.

Julie D is right. Don’t feed your dog cat food. You might think, oh yeah protein is a good thing, but it’s too high in protein for dogs.

Cat food does have higher protien.. but cats need higher protein. Cat food is richer in fats and other nutrients.

That doesnt mean cat food is “better”.. cat food is better for CATS. Cats have a higher metabolism and need the higher levels of protien and fats in their diet.. there are nutrients in the cat food that cats need.

Dogs need DOG food.. the higher levels of fat, protiens and nutrients can cause problems if dogs are fed cat food, such as pancreatis, bladder/kidney stones, upset stomache, etc.
