Why does my border collie have black spots on his gums?
ByHe’s a 2 year old full bred black and white border collie. He has light gray/black spots underneath some of his teeth on his gums and around his mouth (like his doggie lips lol). He was away from me on a farm for like a year and I don’t really know what happened. I try not to let him eat things from outside but he’s a dog..Is this something to worry about?

It’s just pigmentation. Dogs (as well as other animals) often have color variations in their gums and tongue. It’s harmless and some times is a sign of good breeding in some breeds.

From my experience, no. I have a dog and he’s had black spots in his mouth since he was a puppy, and his vet never said anything about them when examining his teeth.

Our Norwegian Elk Hound has black spots in his mouth, gums, etc, and I asked our vet and she said it is normal and nothing to worry about.
Some people believe that a black mouth is a sign of intelligence.
